How Much Did It Snow In Niseko This Winter?

Winter 2025–26 asked for patience early, then rewarded us in classic Niseko style. Here’s how the season unfolded – with the usual reminder that no two winters are alike, and next season could look very different in terms of when the big snowfalls arrive. One thing is certain though: we’re sure to see consistent snowfall from December through March again.

December started unusually slowly, with the resort opening on December 4 and lighter base depths than many skiers expect through Christmas. Still, we recorded 3.7m / 12ft by month’s end, with 25 fresh snow days at Grand Hirafu’s 850m weather station.

Once January arrived, winter really kicked in. Cold temperatures, regular storm cycles and a powerful mid-month run of snowfall brought the mountain back to full winter form, delivering one of the standout Januarys of recent years. For several weeks, the whole of Niseko was literally snowed under. We recorded 6.2m / 20ft of snowfall with 27 fresh snow days. Wow!

We woke up to many days like this in January

February delivered another 2.63m / 8.5ft of fresh snow on 19 days and conditions staying fresh through the traditional peak travel period. March brought a clear shift toward spring, adding 75cm / 2.5ft of snowfall across 9 days with fresh top ups

April added just 10cm / 4 inches on April 12, but the base built through January and February carried the season through to the final day of skiing on May 6. The peak base depth at 850m was 4m / 13ft on February 20. A highlight was the Swatch Nines freestyle event with athletes from all over the world performing on the biggest park Niseko has ever seen (pictured below) which kept the atmosphere pumping right into the quieter spring season.

By the close of the season in May, Niseko United recorded a season total of 13.5m / 44ft of snowfall, with fresh snow reported on 80 days. January alone accounted for more than half the season’s total. The largest single-day total was 75cm / 2.5ft on 13 December.

Compared with recent seasons, 2025–26 finished on par with recent winters. It was not in the same category as heavier recent seasons such as 2020–21, with 15.9m, but it was still a great Niseko winter.
