Amidst adversity and uncertain times worldwide during this winter season, the ski resorts of Niseko United persevered and remained open. There were many difficulties during winter 2020/21, be we choose to focus on the positives and look toward the future! Thank you to all of our guests and supporters of Niseko United!
Those who were lucky enough to visit or live in Niseko this winter were treated to one of the best winters in recent memory! Amazingly consistent snowfalls meant powder in the hills nearly every single day of peak season. Moreover, Japan’s closed borders meant that international guests could not visit. Of course, we miss all of our international friends and cannot wait for you to come back! However, the lack of guests meant empty slopes, no lift lines, and an all-you-can-ski powder buffet for the locals and those fortunate to visit.
Take a look at the image below from Niseko Grand Hirafu Resort comparing their data on snowfall across recent winters. December, January, and February each showed nearly the same amount of snowfall, and totaled up to an above-average snowfall in just 3 months! This means that if you were to visit anytime in peak season, you were sure to score one (or many!) of those dreamy deep powder days that made Niseko so famous.
Niseko also enjoyed wonderful spring weather on the slopes. Spring skiing came quickly in March, with many perfect bluebird sunny days. March powder days were also common, with many days featuring a fresh 10 cm or more of snow to enjoy. Late April snowstorms were present as well, with powder being found on the peak as late as April 26th! This spring also featured minimal rain, ensuring plenty of snow on the slopes until closing day on May 5th.
Niseko’s impressive development is certainly not slowing down either. Once the world allows easier travel and international guests can visit again there will be some exciting new experiences. Hanazono Niseko will have new chairlifts for winter 2021/22, and new luxury hotels will be waiting to welcome guests such as Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and more.
Thank you to all of you for your support during the 2020/21 winter season. The future is looking very bright in Niseko, and we can’t wait to welcome you all back next winter!
