After a cumulative 16.6m of snow settled on Mt Annupuri this winter, the lifts finally stopped turning on May 6. What a winter it was! With 165 days of operation, our daily average across the season was just over 10cm a day.
The snow started really coming down a week before official opening day on November 23, and from then on it snowed on 37 of 40 days until News Year’s Day. Official records from the 820m station at Grand Hirafu show it snowed on an incredible 89 of the first 100 days of winter until March 2 – that’s an 89% chance of snow in powder season!
On cue, the snow backed off from early March offering excellent spring skiing for visitors looking for fair-weather skiing. On that note, March has become extremely popular, with increasing foreign visitor numbers every year – this year up 18%!
Both March and April offer cheaper accommodation, easier restaurant booking, and still offer excellent snow. In March there is generally a good chance of powder days, but if not, there is still usually plenty of snow right through until the end of April.
Whenever you came to Niseko this past season, we thank you for visiting and hope you had the experience of a lifetime.
Everyone in Niseko is enjoying a break between seasons and this week watching the sakura (cherry blossom) trees blooming before things really start to warm up into summer.
There is much more to Niseko than winter – come back and check out what it looks like without snow and all the things there are to do!
