Niseko’s heavy winter eases up towards the end of February, meaning March and April offers the best of all worlds. While the deep snow of peak season is what made Niseko famous, there is no denying that many people around the world love skiing with a backdrop of blue skies and sunny days. Well, in Niseko in spring you can have your cake and eat it too!
March
Locals love March because after several months of harsh winter weather, the sun starts to break through more regularly and temperatures begin to creep back upwards. Often the first signs of spring are a sunny morning with the sound of snow melting back off the house.
The warmer, sunnier days are great for kids and families and there are also excellent opportunities to take Instagram photos of Mt Yotei while you ski. However, for powder hounds there is often short sharp bouts of snowfall so there are still opportunities to experience Niseko’s famous powder – often coupled with blue skies.
The peak-season crowds start subsiding in March, meaning fewer people on the mountain. This is great for beginners who have more space on the bunny slopes to learn on, and awesome for powder hunters who have less competition for fresh tracks.
It’s also easier to book restaurants in March – often you can walk in to popular restaurants without need to book ahead. Accommodation is priced at off-peak rates too, so you have more money to spend on sushi and sake!
April
The season really starts to wind down in April. The snow is generally all melted back off the roads and sidewalks around the villages and it’s often warm enough to wear a T-shirt in the middle of the day – both on and off the mountain!
Accommodation is at its cheapest and it’s easy to get restaurant bookings, although some restaurants start closing up shop for the winter so there is a little less choice than peak winter.
There aren’t many fresh snowfalls during April, but thanks to the several metres deep snow base that accumulated over winter, there is still lots of snow to enjoy. Thanks to the huge snowfall we’ve had this winter this spring there is no better time to book a spring holiday than now!
